ABOUT UYRS

Founded by Anthony Martin in 1998, the Urban Youth Racing School (UYRS) is a 501 C3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Philadelphia dedicated to exposing inner city youth, ages 8-18, to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) career opportunities in the motorsports industry through education, training and on track driving experience.

To date, UYRS has impacted the lives of over 7,500 at risk youth and counting. Over the last two decades, UYRS has worked with corporate and educational partners like General Motors, the Office of Naval Research, the Knight Foundation, Chevrolet and the Jordan Brand to impact the lives of its students.

UYRS MISSION

  • Give inner-city children an opportunity to enhance their education and life skills by using Motorsports as the magnet and education as the compass
  • Provide urban youth with a knowledge and an awareness of the career opportunities within the motorsports industry
  • Serve as a grassroots driver development program for innercity youth who would not otherwise have an opportunity to race
  • Provide a vehicle to expand and diversify the fan base of motorsports
  • Provides a pipeline of talent from communities of color for STEM based career paths
  • Impact the life trajectory for at risk youth

OBJECTIVES

The Urban Youth Racing School (UYRS) is set to host the Celebrity Grand Prix that introduces young, inner-city children to the world of motorsports. This year’s Grand Prix will be hosted in conjunction with NASCAR Rising Star Kyle Larson and Friends.

UYRS and its corporate partners will create a Midway STEM to engage the local community throughout the day. Families and kids will be able to experience demonstrations from UYRS corporate partners and learn more about their impact on the community.

Past Honorary Drivers, Masters of Ceremony, Grand Marshalls and special guests have included; 5 Time NASCAR Champion Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr; Bubba Wallace, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Tina Gordon (NASCAR Driver), Reggie Showers (NHRA Driver), Styles (The LOX), Rocwiller (Hip Hop Producer), NAAM Brigade (Philly Group) and Carvin Haggins (R&B Producer) and many more.

RACE VENUE The Please Touch Museum

The Please Touch Museum is a children’s museum that focuses on teaching children through interactive exhibits and special events. Located at Memorial Hall, the last major building left from the 1876 Centennial Exposition.

Conveniently located in Fairmount Park, the race will be surrounded by the Philadelphia Zoo, School of the Future, Schuylkill River, Mann Music Center and the Parkside Ave neighborhood of West Philadelphia.

  • 9:00 am Track is Hot and open for Practice
  • 11:00 am Grand Marshals circle Track To Kick Off Race
  • 11:05 am Qualifiers with NASCAR Drivers (Heats 1 & 2)
  • 12:00 pm Elected Officials Race
  • 12:30 pm Qualifiers Cont.
  • 1:00 pm Semi Finals Groups A & B
  • 2:00 pm NASCAR Driver’s Showdown
  • 2:30 pm Championship Race
  • 3:00 pm Awards Ceremony & Closing Remarks

*Interactive STEM EXPO Area Open to the Public, 11:30 am to 5:00 pm

RACE FORMAT SUBJECT TO CHANGE

  • 32 Teams of 4 compete in Heats of 8 for Qualifiers
  • Top 4 from each Heat move on to the Semi-Finals
  • Top 4 from each Semi-Final heat (Group A & B) go to the Finals
  • Top 8 then battle it out for the Grand Prix of Philly Final
  • Each race is 20 mins in length
  • All Qualifiers, Semi-Final and Final Races will be from Standing Start
  • Each Driver on the Team must race a minimum of 4 mins, maximum of 6 mins
  • All Driver transfers in designated Driver Exchange Area only
  • No Team member permitted on the course unless driving
  • All first-time kart drivers must join Open Practice (11:30 am - 1:00 pm)
  • Any kart rendered undriveable due to collision will cause team to forfeit its position (any kart undriveable due to mechanical failure will be replaced asap)

Indicate their karting level of experience (None, Drive on Occasion, Amateur, Professional)

Be onsite at 11:30am on Race Day for Driver Practice if they are new to karting and/or have little karting experience
